Sonny Barger was born in Modesto, California on October 8, 1938. He help found the Oakland, California chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in 1957. Prior that he was a member of the Oakland Panthers motorcycle club. Sonny became the national president of the Hells Angels a year later when the former leader went to prison. Under his leadership, dozens of Angels chapters amalgamated into one cohesive club.

He has appeared in many films including Hells Angels on Wheels, Hell's Angels '69, Dead in 5 Heartbeats, and on the TV series Sons of Anarchy.
