She won three major championships on the LPGA Tour. Lopez competed at the University of Texas before turning professional in 1997. She retired in 2003 but unretired in 2007. Lopez won 48 LPGA Tour events and four other events. She won the Women's PGA Championship in 1978, 1985, and 1989.

Lopez tied for second at the U.S. Women's Open in 1975, 1977, 1989, and 1997. She also tied for second at the du Maurier Classic in 1979, 1981, and 1996 and finished tied for third at the ANA Inspiration event in 1995. Lopez was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987. She received many awards and accolades including being the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1978 and the LPGA Tour Player of the Year in 1978, 1979, 1985, and 1988. Lopez was named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1978 and 1985. She was previously married to professional baseball player Ray Knight.
